The National Art Center Tokyo

The Art of Portraiture in the Louvre Collections

From the 30th of May until the 3rd of September 2018 the National Art Center Tokyo is showcasing the special exhibition The Art of Portraiture in the Louvre Collections. 110 works selected from all eight departments of Paris' most famous art museum, the Louvre, can be seen in Roppongi. An audio guide explains the characteristics and specifics of portraits in art over the years.

The exhibition seems to be quite popular, as although I went there early many people were already waiting in line to see it. Prepared with an audio guide (the only languages seem to be Japanese or English) I went to see the many paintings and sculptures.

There is a special section dedicated to Napoleon and also Ludwig XIV, the Sun King. I was mostly impressed by Jacques-Louis Davids' La mort de Marat, Claude Rameys Napoleon I in coronation robes and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijns Venus und Amor. One of the higlights is also La Bella Nani by Paolo Veronese, which is on display in Japan for the first time in 27 years. If you love art, this exhibition is a must see!

Getting there

The National Art Center is really close to Roppongi station.
